Towards the start of Pentecost 2023, I wrote a series about the Nicene Creed (325 CE, amended 381 CE), the statement of faith that has, for better or worse, defined the boundaries of orthodox Christian belief for over 1,600 years. My goal was not to focus primarily on the political, theological and linguistic controversies that spurred its writing, though it’s impossible to write about the Creed without referencing these things, but rather to to focus on the spirituality of the Creed, something I think is essential but has been misunderstood, neglected, and widely forgotten.
